Competitive swimming in Belarus has a long tradition. The first republican championship was held in 1927.
Since then, a large galaxy of swimmers has been trained in the BSSR, who have become multiple prize-winners, champions and record-holders of the USSR, world, Europe and the Olympic Games. These are two-time Olympic champion, world record-holder Sergei Koplyakov, Olympic champion Elena Rudkovskaya, silver medalist of the Olympic Games Elvira Vasilkova, multiple champion and record-holder of the USSR and Europe Sergei Labzo, prize-winners of European championships and Cups Lyudmila Brekhova, Olga Klevakina, European record-holder, winner of five gold medals of the World Universiade Irina Laricheva and others.
In each four-year Olympic training cycle, starting in 1993, swimmers have achieved certain successes at the World and European Championships. The winners and prize winners of the World and European Championships were: A. Gukov, E. Popchenko, N. Baranovskaya, O. Rukhlevich, D. Kalinovsky, E. Rudkovskaya, A. Shcherba, S. Khokhlova, A. Gerasimenya, P. Sankovich, E. Tsurkin, Yu. Khitraya, O. Demidova. In total, during this period, 49 medals (12 gold, 14 silver, 23 bronze) were won in the World and European Championships, including at the Olympic Games, over six Olympic cycles, for the first time in 2012 in London (Great Britain) two silver medals were won by A. Gerasimenei at distances of 50 m and 100 m freestyle and in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) - a bronze medal at a distance of 50 m freestyle.
